Burn Ban


STEP 1: You must call the Clayton County Fire & Emergency Services Burn Line at 770-473-3836 to see whether burning is allowed in the County.  This information is updated by 9:00a.m.  If NO burning is allowed, STOP and wait for conditions to improve.  No permit will be issued for Clayton County.

STEP 2: If burning is allowed you must obtain a burn permit from the GA Forestry Commission by visiting or by calling 1-877-OK2-BURN (652-2876).  Follow the steps when prompted.  A copy of the permit number shall be made available to the fire department upon request.  REMEMBER, your permit is valid for the date requested ONLY.


Residents whose health is adversely affected by smoke can apply for a Medical Burn Ban in their area.  The application shall be signed by a physician (M.D.) licensed to practice medicine in the State of Georgia.  Medical Burn Bans are limited to a geographical area of .25 miles. Resident’s wishing to apply for a medical burn ban shall submit an application to the Clayton County Fire Marshal’s located at 7810 Hwy. 85 Riverdale, GA 30274.

The location for open burning shall be greater than 25 feet from any structure, and provisions shall be made prevent the fire from spreading to within 25 feet of any structure.

Fire shall be limited to a size that can be easily controlled with the resources available on the property.

Burning shall only be conducted Monday-Friday and on approved burn days as determined by the Fire Marshal’s Office. 

Persons violating this ordinance shall be subject to a fine not to exceed $1,000.00 per violation
